People complaining about the "misuse" of "literally" are the worst pedants. It's blatantly acceptable hyperbole. People just love to hate on it because they think it makes them seem more smart/educated.

I have never seen the word "literally" used to *mean* figuratively; I have seen it used as an intensifier in contexts in which it is expected that the reader/listener knows the use is figurative, but never to convey that as new information.
