Simultaneously striving for intellectual humility & creative audacity is hard, but I've noticed that people who are genuinely curious about *everything* don't seem to have to swim upstream to get there.https://twitter.com/michael_nielsen/status/965443482390224896 …

Nice - curiosity as a common causal factor to give you both! Must admit, personally I find humility + audacity sometimes in tension. Perhaps I should nurture simple curiosity more.

I should, too. I think ego/self-narrative stuff is a pretty typical obstacle. I think there are probably a few paths around that, e.g. practicing mindfulness socially or adopting a really strong "this is play!" lens in conversation.

Ego/self stuff can help in both phases, especially the second. I'm not sure it's entirely possible to do without, especially for very ambitious work. Still, I bet a strong curiosity and "this is play" lens lessens the tension a lot!

I'd push back on that a bit... not that having a self-narrative is bad, but I think there are a lot of traps there. For example, it's hard to be really creative if you subtly view every idea you have as somehow *reflective of you*, A Bright and Responsible Adult.

Oh, I def agree it's replete with traps. But also maybe not optional to navigate - when I think of work I admire, it mostly (always?) seems to be done by people with strong self-regard. Still: independently nurturing one's own curiosity also seems like a good idea!

It was an epiphany at 19 or so to realize that ambition was not something to hide or be ashamed of. Which, somehow, was an idea I'd internalized growing up.

Avoidance of ambition is meta-self-orientation. Ambitious people look self-important. Who am I to have such ambition?
