I'd say that the ability to ignore groupthink, and reason on your own about a hyped-up new technology, from first principles, is one of the most important qualities to have as a technologist. Rare, maybe because it requires extensive familiarity with tech & econ first principles

I would therefore like to know, who among the DL community are actually seeking novel first principles? The only prominent research who seems to be trying to think differently is Hinton. Everyone else seems to be thinking in the same way. Just look at what made it through ICLR.

To be fair, novel thinking is a matter of degree. Perhaps we should rank researchers in terms of the novelty of their research. Anyone have a list of top 20 novel DL researchers? I would say that certain DL celebrities will not crack this list.
