Are you overestimating the generalist knowledge of http://nature.com readers? In my experience, people who have deep specialist knowledge can be amazingly ignorant of anything outside their field. Just a thought.
Not related to my estimates of their generalist knowledge. Just that (a) such people often have strong ideas about how to improve the world, in my experience; and (b) apparently, as a group, perform about as well as a random # generator on these sorts of questions.
