I do agree with what you're saying, but I'd also take the survey results with a grain of salt: they've carefully chosen the framing and available choices to bias us to the wrong answers. e.g. the correct answers are often an extreme choice amongst the options
Sure. Still: worse than chance (or, more recently, a little better than chance) is not an impressive showing. If someone showed me their method for getting 9% on MNIST I wouldn't be impressed, even if they convincingly argued there are biases in the data set.
