Yes. And no. "Knew" is too strong for some questions; "had a good idea" is closer. I could easily have gotten 5/8 or 6/8 (or 8/8) initially.
Incidentally, for forming good models of these kinds of questions, I recommend following @ourworldindata & @MaxCRoser.

Does your Anki use have anything to do with this? I remember you saying you commit a lot of demographic information etc to memory; could the resulting models be to blame?

No - my Anki for demographics has been mostly local (and some for Africa, actually)
