It is not overblown: on 6 of 8 questions people did worse than chance, i.e., worse than a random number generator. That's appalling for such basic knowledge.
I should clarify: this was true when I wrote the essay. I haven't re-checked - it's possible Nature has updated their numbers. Though eyeballing them they still look really bad, comparable to a random number generator.
