Given how hard it seems to be to adequately explain the origin of quantum speed-ups when talking to journalists, I propose a challenge: Try to explain the origin of the speed-up in a single tweet. I have no idea if anyone other than me will try this, but if you do use #QCinaTweet

Quantum algorithms gain an advantage through a combination of two features of quantum mechanics: 1) The exponential size of the Hilbert space of multi-qubit systems and 2) wavelike interference of amplitudes. Neither feature is enough on its own, but combined they are.

I agree that something further about universality in the way amplitudes are manipulated is necessary. I’m not sure how to explain that well though.
