What are the biggest advances to come out of academic HCI in the past 20 years?

it was published at eurocrypt, but the idea of putting humans to do in the middle of computer systems for tasks that computers cannot do is very much what a captcha is about, and that's (almost quintessentially) HCI
The question's about what comes out of the academic HCI community, not what is HCI. I thought captcha's had come squarely out of academic HCI (von Ahn), but sounds like they had an earlier life.
