Perhaps more indictment of typical "conversation piece" books than praise for Fire and Fury, .. or perhaps something in the middle. The guy does know how to make pages turn, has a knack for character, and is only occasionally precious. Considering fast turnaround, impressive.
It's v. hard to write as well as a typical conversation piece book (having written a popular science book). So I think that's high praise. Editors at big publishers all seem to have tonnes of stories of famous scientists who could barely write at all.
Well that's a separate issue - many scientists being bad writers vs most conversation piece books stinking (even when written by professionals).
Just talking about the quality of prose - my experience was that it requires a huge amount of work to write as well as a typical such book. Never mind what the best prose stylists achieve.
