What are the biggest advances to come out of academic HCI in the past 20 years?
I wasn't particularly focused (or not) on gadgets - that's why I wrote "advances". I'm interested in major advances in understanding of how humans and computers interact. Most people have responded with particularly product ideas, though.

Maybe HCI is more like design than psychology, in which case advances with impact are more practice than theory. Or maybe that’s just where it looks to me from outside academe (or, currently, and engineering school), and academic HCI has a different mission.
