I should add Mark Bolas, whose work led to the resurgence in VR. Some of it was done before 1998, but much of the most important stuff was since.

Do you mean advances that end up in real products? I like the sub field of tangible interfaces and the questions it explores. Not sure how to measure its impact in the real world https://tangible.media.mit.edu/project/inform/

I'm happy for any advance that means dramatic improvements in our understanding of how humans and computers interact, regardless of whether it's in a product. Of course, radically new products are a common expression of when this has happened.

Do brain-computer interfaces count? If so, neural prosthetics might be up there.
-
How much HCI input is there? Everything I've read in the field has been done primarily by neuroscientists, or specialists in the various sensory technologies used. But I'm not deeply read.

This is terrible literalism. These are significant and impactful conceptual contributions, not just a couple of cool products
-
I very carefully didn't ask for products. I asked for advances, and as I've stated several times in comments I'm interested in any advance from academic HCI which contributes to understanding of human-computer interaction.

Didn't multitouch start in HCI labs?

I don’t like to say it, but this is my reading. There are a few interesting research systems—I’d say Jifei Ou’s work in pneumatic UI But fundamentally the field’s epistemology has been unable to understand the advances in process developed in industry

I’ve been waiting and hoping for someone to call me out on my review of “Positive Computing,” with the details I’ve been missing; I don’t know that it’s forthcoming. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2009539132 …
