In research (ML and in general) neither academia nor industry seems to have figured out how to systematically teach talented newcomers how to become productive researchers. Individual mentors yes, but not robust and transferrable best practices. This is a huge missed opportunity.https://twitter.com/MacInTweets/status/960998757499318272 …

The tech skills gap is such astounding bullshit. “it’s hard to find trained people” means “we don’t want to train anyone.” Everyone thinks that training should come from all employers except them, because of their extremely unique org structure and margins and tech stack bla bla

Codified, transferable best practices are easy when you encounter the same situations over again. Education is hard and students are so different. Despite 1000s of years, education at all levels is deeply unsatisfying. At some point we realize we have to teach ourselves [shrug].

I found that all of my best learning experiences came not from the teacher knowing how to teach me, but from me knowing what I could get from them. Both in music and in research.

Agree with sentences 1-3, but for me that "[shrug]" is more like a "[deep sigh]", and some quixotic unwillingness to accept that it *has to* be this way. I think going meta is the right approach here: teaching research probably looks like teaching how to teach onesself.

I wound up advisor-less (in the hands-on sense) for few years. I probably could have gotten certain things quicker if I was spoonfed, but ultimately, that may be the reason I became an independent researcher.

What skills or habits did you use to make the most out of being advisor-less? Many students would have fallen into helplessness or depression in that situation. I posit there's something you brought to the table that allowed you to respond productively. Curious what that was!

I believe there can both be (a) a lot of value in much improved mentoring; and (b) great value in learning how to work in isolation. There is a quote on this from Grothendieck that means a lot to me https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8605193  (especially after quitting tenure to work independently)

Definitely. I'm sort of grasping for the (a) that causes (b). What does it look like to provide contexts in which trainees reliably learn how to work in isolation? Even if they didn't have the prereqs when they arrived? What *is* the prerequisite chain for learning to learn?

I study in a tech uni without teachers/mentors. Prereqs: having a desire to learn. Context: a) they select students based on a one-month endurance test b) give us a workplace c) financial support c) we unlock progressively harder challenges.
