In research (ML and in general) neither academia nor industry seems to have figured out how to systematically teach talented newcomers how to become productive researchers. Definitely. I'm sort of grasping for the (a) that causes (b). What does it look like to provide contexts in which trainees reliably learn how to work in isolation? Even if they didn't have the prereqs when they arrived? What *is* the prerequisite chain for learning to learn?

I study in a tech uni without teachers/mentors. Prereqs: having a desire to learn. Context: a) they select students based on a one-month endurance test b) give us a workplace c) financial support c) we unlock progressively harder challenges.
