Can people give me a quick rundown on why we are supposed to be so against the car in space thing? I don't get it

There is no good reason - it seems to be people who don't understand the value of good marketing, of humour, of being human & playful & exploratory. Even from a solely mercenary point of view, the value to the Tesla brand far more than justifies it.

People also seem to be confused and assuming that the whole point of the launch was to put the car in space. The car was intended to be a test load, as opposed to a lump of concrete that was the alternative. The flight itself was the real project.

Right? People act like they developed the rocket solely to launch the roadster.
