1/ You can't separate the "place of positivity" from the context of "patriarchal custom" when we're specifically talking about a generalized policy of restaurants given a separate menu to women.

2/ Everything ends up being part of a broader cultural gender dynamic. Chivalrous 'positive' actions in one context are connected to negative actions in other contexts like the boardroom.

I always understood those with prices were given to the host only.. Guests got ones with no prices, nothing to do with gender.

An anecdote. A female surgeon was trying to negotiate for an equal wage from the hospital as her male employees given her equal performance in the operating room and equal seniority. She was told that she didn't need as much pay since it's assumed that men pay the bills.

Here in Italy is a fairly common practice, but only in high-end restaurants

80s? The restaurant in Paris where I proposed to my wife in 2009 did it.

Dude, grow up. Coming from a place of positivity is utter f*cking b*ullshit that ppl who romanticise the past choose to believe in. The truth is women weren't bothered with prices bc they were 1 step from being seen as pretty furniture. It's not nostalgic, kind, it's revolting.

Were Jim Crow laws also established by people coming from a place of positivity? I mean they were offensive and discriminatory, but maybe the people meant well. They just didn't want blacks to bother themselves with democracy or freedom.
