It was much easier to remember and understand the little bits of world news that I would encounter in a day, because I could connect it to something already in my mind. This way, I learned much more than just what was on the cards. I second your enthusiasm for Anki.
I've tried something similar, though much smaller in scale - about 50 cards are about Africa. I'd love to add a few thousand cards, ideally while travelling.
