“X looks like a toy!” and “Yes, but the most important things always start out looking like toys” are both true statements and both useless statements. You need a theory as to why it will, or will not, become more than a toy. Is there a roadmap? 1/

I’m skeptical of smart speakers not because they’re not very useful now, but because I do’t think there is a roadmap for them to become much more useful. I don’t think they’ll get better. 2/

If you think of smart speakers as primary UI to the home, it makes them very useful. The home needs a computer, and its interface isn't very complicated. Gestures and more general vision can be added to smart "speakers". e.g. AMZN cloud cam + Alexahttps://twitter.com/Reza_Zadeh/status/948454677380661249 …

Reza ZadehVerified account @Reza_ZadehThe common house needs a computer to control all the parts that are becoming increasingly connected to the internet. The primary UI to that computer will not be a keyboard nor a touchscreen, because that forces the user to move in the house. It will be: voice, gestures, or both.Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 10 likes -

I am not at all convinced that there needs to be a common computer or interface

I used to think the same, until I slowly converted the entire house to be connected. All cost less than ~$4k. Homes cost millions. Selling a home without connected devices will soon be like selling a TV without a remote.

If you doubt there will be a *common* computer vs any, consider the setup cost: it takes too long to setup a new device right now. It should just work. Like apps on a phone, you should just be able to bring a device home and it connects to the home. That needs common computer.

Outside the USA and Japan, no one lives in a new house.

China likely builds far more new homes than the US, even per capita: https://www.census.gov/construction/nrc/pdf/newresconst.pdf … (about 1.2 million / year in US) & https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Housing_in_China … (goal of 36 million over 4 years)
