it's like deep learning. complex life only stable at a certain scale. In order for a tropical biome to work, do you need the ocean?
Well, I think that's premature pessimism. Humanity shouldn't give up before it's seriously begun.

oops, didn't mean to say these efforts are not worth trying. personally very interested in this kind of work actually. As a CS person I like thinking about the worst-case complexity of a problem :)
