What are the conferences and events you're most excited about in 2018?

While searching around for events, I discovered that Biosphere 2 is now used as a conference center: http://biosphere2conference.org/ A pity. Great project in many ways, though of course there were problems in execution.

Self-enclosed large scale ecosystem projects have been unsuccessful ths far, and not for lack of trying. What do you think it would take to make it work?

No idea - I'm not an expert on them. How many serious attempts have been made? I know of only one.

there's a short list at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closed_ecological_system#Examples … Also every high school "eco-column" ever (self-enclosed biosphere with sunlight as only input, they usually die in ~2 weeks)

in the most optimistic scenario, this is simply a software control problem in which carbon/water/nutrient cycle is carefully regulated. In the least optimistic scenario, all biomes smaller than a biosphere are provably unstable :(

I don't see much reason for pessimism. Looking at those examples, it barely seems like serious attempts have been made. Give it a hundred years and 20 attempts with very different strategies, and learning from prior goes...
