Theories of human sleep still seem very speculative. I sometimes wonder if there's some function of sleep that's essential to higher intelligence. And if AGIs would need a similar function?
Good point. I'm still curious about my speculative question about AGIs, though.

The sleep theories I've heard are either too specific to cellular biology and metabolism to obviously port, or else remind me of stop-the-world garbage collection strategies in first-wave dynamic languages

Worth noting that dolphins and some birds sleep one hemisphere at a time. What "hemisphere" counts and specializations make sense for AGI?

You should have a chat with
@aubreydegrey ! He's an expert in both AI and biology. He has a frequently-used line, "Any machine with moving parts will, as a matter of physics, damage itself", and thus require routine maintenance (analogous to sleep) to keep itself in working order - 1 more reply
