I don’t know a single mathematician who liked math in grade school. A few of them seem to have started getting intrigued when they were introduced to geometry.

I liked math as much as I liked anything in grade school. But high school geometry “proofs” are the worst.

This definitely happened to me. I just hated math in grade school. Although in my case; growing up in a remote tiny town; most of my teachers weren’t able to explain in terms of what practical implications this shit has.

Actually many mathematicians do start early in life well before grade school to think about fundamental math concepts (Hardy’s Apology) which are quite different from the math ‘taught in grade school’. You should make the distinction between math that is taught and real math.
