In other words, don't use superfluous and false exclamation points. My favourite boss ever routinely had emails that were more than 10% exclamation points by weight. But she was completely genuine (and very, very excitable).

People use exclamation points as a way of indicating that they're not angry, for instance "Thanks." vs "Thanks!". I think we should start using the acclamation point for this purpose.
