For instance, I meet a lot of smart people who (correctly) are very impressed by some of the progress of deep learning, but who nonetheless have very weak models of how it can fail.

More directly is realizing that that property - having an internalized sense and good models of how sets of very strong ideas can fail - is a key milestone in a person's intellectual development.
