Auto company executives and salesmen don't really know how cars work. Is ML different? Should we expect execs and managers at companies that do ML to understand it?

I expect the same will be true of ML. An interesting example is PageRank / Google, where superiority of execs on the algorithms (and distributed computing) side seems to have been a big advantage.
