I've taken to asking institutions to cover my costs up-front. It often produces a rather irritated response, as though I'm acting entitled.

Upfront as in commit, in advance, to reimburse you or actually pay you upfront?

Pay for plane tickets and hotel. I submit food, Uber etc receipts later.

Which is nuts: a billion-dollar entity is asking me to donate my time for free, and to put up the money to do so, hoping I'll be reimbursed.

Think yourself lucky, as a consultant I sometimes float thousands of dollars of hardware costs alongside thousands of dollars in travel.
