Or they are an experimentalist. Or they work with a team. Lone genius not the only method for incredible science.
I don't see what being an experimentalist or on a team has to do with it. I know experimentalists & teams who follow the strategy I suggest

Being an experimentalist means huge sunk costs and setup times that make it hard to switch. On a team if you switch you leave teammates out.
