It doesn't require such confidence - it requires confidence that no-one else is doing what you do, which is very different.

I suspect many are instinctively resistant to this because the principle leads naturally to admitting that there may be too many of us

It's part of the reason I left quantum computing, and haven't pursued deep learning in the conventional way. Hard to see as meaningful.

Or they are an experimentalist. Or they work with a team. Lone genius not the only method for incredible science.

I'm not sure I completely buy this. There are many incentives to pursue a hot topic, and history is full of such competitions.

Makes sense to me in theory but challenging in practice, esp. for early career folk with pressure to publish visibly and amass citations.
