Do the explorer types get backlash even if they're honest about the fact that they're just in exploration-mode? If so that seems unfair.
I'm just thinking that exploration of socially sensitive things is often fraught. Eg your recent request for hypotheses about gender/tech.

By contrast, it's a lot less fraught to say "Hey, here's a really crazy idea about P vs. NP" and go to town...

Oh, I predict I'd have gotten a lot MORE backlash if I seemed to take a position on gender & tech, rather than just floating hypotheses :)
