@fchollet Xerox, AT&T, IBM, Intel, HP all the big chemical cos - used to be std practice -
They all did totally different things, at very different times. Not 20 bigCos doing undirected fund. research simultaneously on same thing.

Is it that different from physicists at Intel/IBM? In both cases (semiconds and AI), some (not all) undirected, but also broad goal in mind.

Yes - there are far more than two companies doing it. Google (x 2!). NVIDIA. Apple. Uber. Facebook. Microsoft. Baidu. IBM. Etc.
