I couldn't find convincing published research to decide so in the end I made up my own simple spacing rules and was happy.
Duolingo has published some interesting stuff on using ML to estimate spacing. There are some obvious improvements, still...

What I would look at is automatically detecting confusing pairs and really concentrating on them.

AFAICT if a card is confusing, either (a) I should add another card; or (b) I should rewrite the card. Seems to work well...
