Quickly skimming the papers, they're big on the event-driven / asynchronous nature of JS. I presume that's a big motivation for the choice.

It’s a natural fit. These days static analysis and good coding practices mean few bugs in production code.

There are also languages like TypeScript which provide more safety and are designed to compile to JS.
