Weird. I was about to reread the "An Americanized Planet" chapter. (Greg Benford recommends skipping this section.)
The book definitely gets better as it goes on. Can't say Benford is wrong.

I find the early parts simultaneously bizarrely wrong and bizarrely prophetic. Plus antimatter, in a 1930 novel.

What I enjoyed wasn't the detailed rights & wrongs. It's the fact he took seriously his own question, & tried to answer it.
