It's damaging, but understandable, to not know why you succeed. It's devastating and inexcusable to not know why you failed.
@patrickc This is very challenging - you feel as though you screwed up badly, when really you were very close to a home run.

@michael_nielsen Interesting. I think part of the problem is inevitable uncertainty around must-haves. If you fail, were you missing 1 or 7? -
@patrickc But in practice, distance seems to help the diagnosis a lot. After my last book I waited a few months & wrote a post-mortem.
