Not on “crisis”, but the best history I’ve read on the climate ever - Heaven's Breath: A Natural History of the Wind. A beautiful prose.

Spencer Weart's book usually gets recommended. I don't know that it is gripping though.
's nytimes rec. has caught much flak for giving the fossil fuel industry short shrift; if we had come closer to acting they would have more assiduously blocked it.
