A quiz I've asked in a dozen in-person conversations: "What is the change in CO2 output by the US since the year 2000?" Everyone gets it wrong, and doesn't even get the sign right. Fracking has made a natural gas boom that displaced coal, and we're down 14%.

It's interesting that they had already stabilized by 2000-2006, prior to the enormous boom in fracking.

2001 recession was extremely shallow. And I very much doubt imports rose enough to make a huge difference. Things like electricity production & transport & construction account for the great majority of CO2 emissions.
