I don’t find “offsets” per se (tree planting etc.) to be verifiable / additional / scalable / permanent enough, so I instead buy renewable energy credits (RECs) vía

This is fair enough, but these kinds of 'avoided emissions' projects have two problems of their own (beyond credibility per se). - additionality: does your money really make them happen - baseline: what would the baseline emission be without your money
