Teleportation is one of the more remarkable predictions of quantum mechanics. Discovered in 1993, it's a way of moving quantum states around, without needing to (directly) send quantum systems from one location to another.

The essay describes in detail how teleportation works, and some of the implications. It's surprisingly hard to tweet about this: many of the properties of teleportation are so weird that one-liners don't really make much sense.

Anyway, for fun: one thing you might think would work is to measure the quantum state, and somehow use that information to recreate it elsewhere. In fact, this turns out to be impossible:pic.twitter.com/bc8MevVhIb

One of the more amusing (and poetic) ways of thinking about teleportation from one of its originators, Asher Peres:pic.twitter.com/cQ29uOVCEY

Of course, none of this is the actual details. For those, see the essay!

I can't resist adding the quantum circuit description of quantum teleportation. If you don't know the language of quantum circuits, this probably looks like hieroglyphics: strange, beautiful, evocative, perhaps awesome, but not directly meaningful.pic.twitter.com/IzL4cmSfca

Of course, what's going on is amazing. Humans spend thousands of years trying to understand nature. And we gradually develop a better and better understanding, and a symbolic representation that encapsulates much of that understanding.

And then we can use that symbolic representation to express new ideas in an extraordinarily compact form. That circuit above is, in many ways, like a marvellous song or poem, encapsulating a huge amount of meaning in a tiny package.

Just to clarify this tweet: teleportation does involve sending classical information, & ultimately classical bits are really quantum systems. But sending classical info is typically far easier than sending coherent quantum information. ht

Something the essay doesn't much do is talk about how one could have discovered quantum teleportation in the first place. Here's a thread explaining how you might have discovered it:https://twitter.com/michael_nielsen/status/1132063254849527808 …

And here's another thread giving a different, in some ways more compact and conceptual proof that teleportation works:https://twitter.com/michael_nielsen/status/1131784174203953153 …
