I'm not wild about gotcha journalism. But geez I'd love to ask some of the people writing about climate some basic questions. What are total CO2 emissions per year? What percentage is due to the US? To China? To coal? To power generation?

Is there a good cheat sheet with these kinds of numbers online anywhere?

Good question. Not sure. IIRC the first few chapters of Robert Henson's "Thinking Person's Guide to Climate Change" provided a lot of the basics. Not sure how systematic it was.

It's pretty easy to get most of these numbers just by googling and/or Wikipedia. I compiled lots of them on the Azimuth Wiki, but I ran out of energy before it had everything I wanted. (1/2)

I'm guessing (?) Avi wants to know: what numbers and models are particularly good numbers and models to know? IIRC Henson's book does a reasonable job of answering that for readers who are pretty serious about wanting to dig into climate, but not necessarily turn pro :-)

Wish I had a better reference! The IPCC report is good, but a bit much. I find myself going down rabbitholes that make Wikipedia look like a meditation session.

Yes, this is definitely a case of not even knowing what questions to ask. I’ll get a copy of Henson’s book to start.

If you can get a preview on Amazon or Google Books, take a look. My guess is there's a book that's a good fit for what you're looking for, but I'm not sure Henson is it.

for a (hydrology focused) piece on quantifying uncertainty in environmental modelling, "Environmental Modelling: An Uncertain Future?" by Keith Beven is a great read. he came up with GLUE, which, like it or hate it, at least got people talking about epistemic model uncertainty
