I'm not wild about gotcha journalism. But geez I'd love to ask some of the people writing about climate some basic questions. What are total CO2 emissions per year? What percentage is due to the US? To China? To coal? To power generation?

It's tempting to say "well, people aren't interested in wonkish, number-and-model laden writing". Maybe. But I wonder. In sport, people seem to love it.

I'm trying to imagine writing about basketball that eschewed all quantitative accounts of last night's big game. Most general climate writing seems a bit like discussing how good or bad LeBron looked on court last night, while ignoring points, rebounds, assists etc.

Funny thing is: of course, there's a tonne of great books, online classes etc that are full of this stuff. I've found the IPCC report(s) surprisingly readable and interesting. But it all seems sub rosa from the pov of popular culture.

I’ve been restraining myself from writing about this... understanding climate change as a moral crisis is somewhat correct, but risks making it impossible to address the practical crisis.

As a moral crisis it seems somewhat similar to air pollution in the 1960s to me. So many people moralistically saying we need to carpool, drive less etc. Turns out those things had little impact. But catalytic converters, emissions standards etc reduced pollution enormously.

A bit dated, but is this the approach you’re looking for: http://www.withouthotair.com/c2/page_22.shtml …

Yes, it's one of my favourite books. There's tonnes of material like this - great books, good papers etc. And enormous numbers of people who know a huge amount, certainly far more than I done. But then I see policy advice / editorials from people who don't seem to know anything.

Could you please suggest some good fundamental readings on this topic? As an introduction for someone who doesn't know anything about climate

The IPCC report is surprisingly good - try assessment report 5. There are, of course, many many books. I enjoyed Daniel Schrag's EdX class, though it focuses more on the earth-system aspect, and only gradually moves onto human-caused climate stuff.
