But when you publish in a scientific society journal, such as the IUCr journals Acta D, Acta F and IUCrJ for structural biologists, anything above production costs goes back into the society, to fund things like meetings, scholarships for students and outreach!

In fact, a lot of society journals are published _by_ the big for-profits. And some societies make an enormous amount of money. The ACS revenue is on the order of half a billion dollars a year.
