Curious: do you know the source of the $300 billion number? How believable is it?

I can't find the exact paper - just the articles it's referenced in - but that figure was reported by the UN:https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-10-23/how-to-halt-global-warming-for-300-billion …

This Time report seems to be the same: https://time.com/5709100/halt-climate-change-300-billion/ … I can't immediately find a paper the numbers are based on, although this is clearly relevant (& the second author is the lead at the relevant UN program):https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1462901117308146 …

The paper I referenced seems to be almost entirely qualitative. I'd be curious to see a model. Their estimates seem to be a lot more optimistic than comparable estimates in the NAS survey report earlier this year:https://www.nap.edu/catalog/25259/negative-emissions-technologies-and-reliable-sequestration-a-research-agenda …

There's a whole bunch in that NAS report, but the summary bit is, if I understand aright, the third entry in a table on page 354. Estimated total capacity is about 2 years of (global) emissions, and per-year rate is somewhat less than 10% of global emissions.pic.twitter.com/Kg9Y2ZPmiu

Anyways, thanks for sharing the piece you did - I wasn't aware of this announcement! I'm writing a short related piece right at the moment, so it's on my mind.
