A possibly apocryphal anecdote from the 80s: at a meeting of fast food industry people, someone asked the McDonald's rep what they ascribed McDonald's dominance (at the time) to. They replied "Well, we make sure the carpark and restaurant and restrooms are all clean and safe."
"But... anyone could do that." "But only McDonald's does." I don't know about companies in general, but it sure seems the equivalent is true inside research institutions. (Forgotten the source. Read it in one of my Dad's business books when I was a teen, & it stayed with me.)
