Great response! Growing up in the 1980s, several of my teachers told us that the world would likely end in a nuclear disaster, and there was little we could do. There's often a kind of hubris in pessimism.pic.twitter.com/lHhylrxGWN

Weirdly on this issue I think the pendulum was swung too far the other way. People mocked Jonathan Schell for suggesting that nuclear annihilation was a possibility when it didn't happen — but the odds were and are still too high!
