I remember hearing stories like this growing up. Then it was "doesn't want to have kids because of the nuclear threat / acid rain / etc". Mostly a convenient trope for journalists, I think.

I know a fair number of people who say things like this so I don't think it's just a journalist thing, though agree there are probably some people looking for pro-social reasons not to. (Tho I've also known people who really wanted kids but thought it immoral and struggled.)
