I remember hearing stories like this growing up. Then it was "doesn't want to have kids because of the nuclear threat / acid rain / etc". Mostly a convenient trope for journalists, I think.

I know a fair number of people who say things like this so I don't think it's just a journalist thing, though agree there are probably some people looking for pro-social reasons not to. (Tho I've also known people who really wanted kids but thought it immoral and struggled.)

Funny, upon reflection about your remark, I've largely changed my mind about my initial tweet. Although it does make me want a very different story. The history of anti-natalism, Malthus, Ehrlich, the decline in fertility, population explosion-to-(possible)-implosion...

TBC: I'm sympathetic to and interested in the woman in the story, and I'm sure I'd get a lot out of chatting with her. But I'm not sympathetic to the kind of systemic factors which I believe likely produce this kind of journalism.
