PG. I think before YC, before startups felt as part of the zeitgeist to people around me, his writing was a massive breath of fresh air to see the world as mutable. It also put the programmer on a pedestal, which always felt powerful. There’s also a cleanliness to his writing.

The other person obviously is Fitzgerald. I think most people have read Gatsby in High School, but between his short stories and non-fiction (not even mentioning his other actual books), Fitzgerald has an assassin-like ability to pick the perfect word at the perfect time.

What I love about writing is the idea that anyone *can* write, yet much like Michael Jordan had this quality to make basketball look effortless (LeBron on the other hand does things that just look hard), Fitzgerald can do the same as a pure writer. Whether it’s a story or essay.pic.twitter.com/4LCeEI6aIc

Writing (and design) have the very interesting property that huge effort + talent make the writing _appear_ easier. And outsiders often think that means the writing process must have been easier for the writer, when the opposite was true.

MJ versus LeBron: I know what you mean. For me, LeBron looks like massive force applied to a problem. MJ is smoother (though still incredibly forceful). It's a bit like Federer vs Nadal.

In most sports, looking at clips from the 80s it's obvious today's top athletes would be much better. But after a brief period to adapt, MJ would clearly just destroy the modern NBA, same as in his own time. Otherworldly.

It’s exactly that, I think about this in a lot of things. People can be great, but how does it look? That look can often make you feel a certain way. Like Westbrook vs Harden is similar too. I ♥️ Harden in that he looks slow and smooth, but is unguardable.https://twitter.com/udayrsingh/status/1119845590194692097?s=21 …

Great win for the #Rockets, interesting to watch the Jazz execute the Popovich playbook against Harden. I want to caveat this with the fact that @JHarden13 may be one of my favorite players in the league. He’s a magician, and probably the most unstoppable guard since Kobe.

I can see Harden is amazingly skilled, but find his foul-oriented game a real turnoff. I'd much rather watch Steph or LBJ or Westbrook or Giannis or KD. Westbrook is so fun to watch, even when he's playing in a way that's arguably bad for his team.

I think within that, however, is why people often miss the mark. I usually describe as the hacker’s hooper. He finds the loop holds and exploits them so close to the margin that it’s a direct turn-off. But... if it were so easy, why isn’t it more exploited? It’s easy, but hard!

Granted I agree, Giannis or KD just do impossible in-human things. Maybe Steph is another great example as well. It looks way too easy. Can’t anyone just toss a ball up? In fact, Steph, your right makes it so easy that it’s basically ruined modern pickup basketball 😂.

With KD in particular I have this sense that at any given point he can just _decide_ to score. It's sorta weird to watch. "Oh, my team needs two points right now? Ok, here we go." LBJ and Giannis have that a bit, too. It's like free points.

As a GSW fan I must admit I'm sorta looking forward to having Steph & Klay (fingers crossed) operate without KD. It's so much fun to watch when they're both on. And, yeah, they make it look very, very easy. (No offense to KD, who is an all-time great.)

Totally agree. Born in Cleveland (only game I’ve seen at the O was G7 2016), so I’m happy that the KD era is over and that I can appreciate Steph without pressure. And yeah, KD is a walking bucket. 7 footers aren’t supposed to have guard skills like that.
