“We want every website, whether it’s e-commerce or anything to be powered by WordPress” is a nasty, monopolistic goal. Listening to Matt muse about 85% marketshare dreams is a real downer. But $300m is a down payment on monopoly dreams.https://techcrunch.com/2019/09/19/automattic-raises-300-million-at-3-billion-valuation-from-salesforce-ventures/ …

We’ve been pretty happy running SvN on Wordpress, but if there’s anything that’d make us bolt, it’d be venture-fueled aspirations of complete dominance. Hiding such distasteful goals behind “open platform” is some disingenuous shit too.

The whole point of the open, thriving web is to have a plethora of platforms, tools, and publishers out there. Monoculture and monopoly are pests upon the free web, whether they’re backed by an open source license or not. Thought Matt of all people would be in tune to that.

Curious: by definition, the HTTP protocol has a 100% monopoly over the web, pretty much tautologically. Is there some Wordpress's goal is worse? (Tone is hard on Twitter, & we don't know one another, so let me say: this is a genuine question, asked b/c I'm trying to understand)

I'm a little reluctant to engage with snark - it often indicates bad faith. Still, in this case the underlying question (corporate versus other types of governance) is one I wondered about. I'm uncertain what the distinguishing feature is. [cont]

HTTP/2 is, I am told, based on a protocol developed by Google, SPDY. And friends who've worked with the IETF tell me that corporate goals play a huge role in setting the agenda and what decisions get made.

One comment that was interesting (I'm paraphrasing): "Want to know what's worse than having a company decide the future of infrastructure? Having a committee of companies decide it."

The person was trying to explain why web standards are such a sprawling mess. That said, I don't entirely buy it - it seems like a balance of competing interests probably prevents at least some forms of bad behaviour. Still, I'd like to understand this better.
