Reflecting on the proposed Princess Bride remake, & thinking about how much luck is involved in making great movies. Blade Runner is a great movie without the "Tears in Rain" monologue, but much less so. And that was re-written by Rutger Hauer at the last minute. Talk about luck!

I can't imagine that while casting Ridley Scott said "I know, we'll get Rutger Hauer, he's just the guy we need to improve the most important part of the script..."

There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one. https://twitter.com/Variety/status/1173954759071547392 …

Great point. All great creativity will have sheer luck which pushes it up to a higher level. Remake will not reproduce that spark, and will regress toward the mean. Remember “Psycho” remake? Oldboy? Give me one quarter and 3 @caltech RAs and we can figure out what to remake

I made the mistake of watching the "Point Break" remake last year. Oops.

Why would they ever want to remake a masterpiece. Talking about Princess Bride, of course.

Because either (a) they think they can make money doing so; or (b) they really love it; or both. Same reason 15,000 fantasy authors have written their version of Lord of the Rings. They're not as good, but I understand why people do it.

Isn't that the complete opposite of luck?

If in most universes Blade Runner doesn't have "Tears in Rain" (because Rutger Hauer got cold feet, was talked out of it, was distracted, etc.) then it sounds like luck to me. Opposite of luck is where most universes have it, but that's unlikely with a last-minute change.

Agreed. It took the movie from great to timeless.

Princess Bride is a subpar comedy that melds weaker parts of Mel Brooks, Franz Oz, and Monty Python. It survives on an odd level of intense nostalgia & a high degree of quotability. Having never watched it until my early 30s, thus making neither of these relevant... snoozefest

Yes, Princess Bride & Blade Runner are perhaps the two most overrated movies of all time. Though, to be fair, I've never managed to stay awake through all of Princess Bride so maybe there's a redeeming ending but I don't think I have it in me to try watching it again.
