I read this and was prepared to call BS (because you know how you get really hungry when you're working on hard problems? but your metabolism isn't increased) but this blood pressure/muscle contractions thing makes sense.

The information about weight loss in the article is pretty compelling, IMO.

Highly unlikely. If they were burning 6k calories/d, they would be breathing and sweating like a marathon runner. The 6k figure is not based on a direct measure of metabolic rate. Shown as early as 1930 that intense cognitive effort has little energy cost. https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/16/6/438.full.pdf …pic.twitter.com/WcRGM4IxS2

This study directly measured energy expenditure (metabolic rate) in experienced chess players while playing chess. Although heart rate increased significantly, total energy expenditure did not (table 1). h/t

Pro video game players mostly have dedicated coaches who manage exercise and diet routines at this point. I guess there’s not as much money in chess but I find it surprising that the community as a whole hasn’t developed this knowledge more systematically by now.

Believe it. Playing pro poker I would eat 4-5 meals a day. Often felt exhausted after 8+ hour sessions and remained at my high school weight easily into 30s.

Interesting. Do the same principles apply to working in a demanding desk job? I always feel physically tired after a hard day's work!
