I'm persuaded by Karpicke's explanation that we use fluency of processing to gauge how much we've learned, even when this signal turns out to be inversely correlated with learning (comparing recall vs review, for instance).

skeptical of mistakes as the answer. it matters *how* they make the mistakes. Look dumb in front of a group? That sucks for an 18 yo in 2019. But Kids get killed in video games all the time but love them, and gamelike explorables are beloved.
